Film notes: Shortcomings (2023)
“Shortcomings” is a clever, witty, and thought-provoking comedy. The film primarily explores the identity issues faced by Asian-Americans, but, from my perspective, it also delves into a broader theme: the obsession with sophistication.
The protagonist, Ben, is undeniably a connoisseur of class. His intense desire for refinement and dignity, however, becomes a burden for those around him, from his closest friend to his romantic partner. Initially, his wit is intellectually appealing, but it soon spirals into prejudice and self-loathing. Throughout the film, Ben unwittingly projects these toxic thoughts onto others.
In essence, “Shortcomings” is a film about the need for some ostensibly mature individuals to truly grow up and embrace adulthood.
